Here in the UK, one of the more popular early evening television shows is “You Say, We Pay”, hosted by Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan.
At around 5p.m., viewers are encouraged to dial a premium rate phone number in order to be in with a chance of appearing on a future episode of the show. However, according to The Mail on Sunday, viewers are actively encouraged to dial the premium rate number after the “winners” have already been selected for the day.
The newspaper alleges that the 24 selected contestants have been chosen up to 29 minutes before being announced on air. In an email that The Mail on Sunday allegedly received from a source close to the show’s producer, it is claimed that up to 32000 people may have been scammed into calling the high cost telephone number after it was too late to be picked.
It is estimated that an average of 15000 viewers per day spend one pound per call whilst attempting to gain entry to the charades style game in which Richard and Judy attempt to guess the names of celebrities or objects through clues given by the contestants.
According to the leaked emails received by The Mail on Sunday the timetable of events in the contestant selection process is thus -
5.01pm - phone lines open for viewers to call
5.06 - 5.08pm - computers randomly select 24 winners
5.09pm - service provider Eckoh provides the winners names to the producer, Cactus, via email
5.13pm - Cactus confirms receipt of the list via email
5.19pm - the show once again displays the premium rate number on screen and encourages viewers to call, even though they have no chance of being picked by this time
5.38pm - the callers that have been accepted as contestants are announced on air.
