Automatic Telling Machines (ATMs) are an almost essential part of the affluent western world. They offer the customer a quick and efficient means of withdrawing cash from their accounts at any time of the day or night.

Unfortunately, they also offer up many opportunities for the less than honest to commit fraud.

It is easy to become complacent when using an ATM but you should always remember that they offer opportunity to a thief…

The following 8 tips can help minimise the risk of you becoming a victim of fraud at the ATM -

1. Always be aware of the surroundings and anyone close by. If anyone makes you feel uncomfortable whilst using the ATM, or are acting in a suspicious manner, then move away and use another machine.

2. Don’t allow anyone or anything to distract you whilst using an ATM.

3. If the ATM you are about to use looks suspicious in any way, i.e., damaged or tampered with, then do not use it. Find another ATM to use and consider reporting the first one to help prevent others from the risk of fraud.

4. If you have any problems whilst using the ATM then think very carefully before accepting ‘help’ from strangers who happen to be in the right place at the right time.

5. Always stand as close to the ATM as possible and shield the PIN pad whilst entering your number.

6. If your card is retained by the machine for any reason then report it to the bank immediately.

7. Put the cash you withdraw somewhere safe before leaving the ATM - never walk away with cash or cards in your hand.

8. If you requested a mini statement or receipt then ensure that you take it with you and dispose of it safely, for example, by shredding it.
