Jack Beesley, a 49 year old from Southampton, is now behind bars after fraudulently claiming £100,000 in benefits payments for his bad back whilst he regularly worked as a carpet fitter.
Beesley received a sentence of 30 months whilst his partner, Jeanette Osman received a 9 month suspended sentence for her involvement.
Southampton Crown Court heard that Beesley had claimed £120,000 in benefits for council tax, housing, disability support and income support, over a period of 10 years during which he carried on business fitting carpets.
Beesley was caught after a 9 month surveillance operation carried out by fraud officers following a tip-off. During that time he was viewd on CCTV near his garage and to have had good movement, bending and kneeling to cut and measure out large pieces of carpet.
Further investigations brought to light the fact that he had purchased £70,000 of carpet over the previous 5 years.
Beesley was convicted of failing to notify the Department of Work and Pensions of the changes in his circumstances.
