Beware Of The 4th Of July E-card Scam

Thu, Jun 26, 2008

Security

Just lately I have received a large number of e-greeting card scams disguised as 4th of July messages.

Which is quite ironic really, considering  that I don’t even live in the US!

That aside, I thought I should share some of the titles of these emails with you in case you receive them -

Happy Fourth of July
Independence Day at the Park
Fourth of July Party

The link within each of these dubious e-cards points to an old trojan known as Trojan:Win32/Tibs.O.

This Trojan is rootkit-enabled which means it can mask itself on your system, thereby avoiding detection by older antivirus software.

Trojan:Win32/Tibs.O is designed to incorporate infected systems into a file sharing botnet which is then presumably used to spread the Trojan further in addition to other nefarious purposes.

So beware!
