Scams

Thanks to Brian Thomas for posing this question via the Report A Scam page.

Firstly, I would say that there is not enough information to give a completely definitive answer, however, there are many tell-tale signs that certainly give a good idea as to whether or not this email is based upon a scam.

My first observation is that ‘Stacey’ seems to be suggesting she is a successful artist. In that case why doesn’t she have an email address based around her website? Ok, so maybe she doesn’t have a website but a yahoo email address isn’t overly professional is it?

Next, look at the information she requires - I wouldn’t feel happy giving that much personal data to someone I knew purely through an email.

Lastly, and most importantly, look at the deal being offered closely.  Stacey claims she is selling art to American tourists who are presumeably visiting the UK. Why are they carrying postal money orders instead of Sterling or Traveller’s Cheques, etc?

How difficult is it to convert said forms of currency into Sterling anyway? Living in the UK myself, I know it is no problem at all to have US dollars converted into Sterling.

After taking your 10% you are to wire the remainder to her. How? Western Union by any chance? If so, chances are the checks will be dishonoured after you have wired the funds, leaving you out of pocket and facing bank charges too.

Verdict: Sounds like a SCAM.

I write to seek your services as a representative in the USA. My name is Stacey Dingle and I am an Artist in UK. I sell my works to many foreigners and most of them are tourists. However, I am always facing serious problem when it comes to selling my art works to Americans because most of them are always offering to pay with US postal Money Orders or checks, which Is difficult for me to cash in UK

I am looking for a Representative in the States who will be working for me as a part time worker and I will be willing to pay 10% for every Transaction.Note that this work wouldn’t affect your present State of work. The role of the representative will be to receive payments from my customers in the States.I need someone that is responsible and reliable, because the cost of coming to the State and getting payments is very expensive.

These payments like I said earlier are in Money Order or checks and will be made out in the name of the representative. Also the payment will be delivered to the would be representative by courier. So all the representative needs to do is cash the payment, deduct His/Her percentage which is 10% and wire the rest back to me, could you perhaps be able to take up this role, Then I will fill you in with the details like I said earlier, This job offer will not affect your present job status.

Any way if you are interested kindly get back to me as soon as possible with this information below
