Scams

Do you ever receive those spam emails offering stocks and shares advice? I get several a day.

At first I was curious as to why they were sending them to me. Obviously, they got my email address from a list somewhere, but with no obvious plea to give them personal information, what could they be after?

Well, the truth is this -

These types of stocks and shares or other financial trading offers are probably from firms who are indeed involved in the financial markets. They trawl the penny shares market and hawk out other low price stocks in order to buy cheap.

Why are these stocks so cheap? Easy! Because in a free market economy, supply and demand dictate value. If a company’s shares are just a penny or a cent then, other than in exceptional and desperately rare circumstances, that is what they are genuinely worth.

So what’s with this email then? It says the price is going to rocket up!?! That, my friend, is the scam. By pandering to people’s greed the company that issued this email is enticing some individuals to buy into these shares to make a quick killing (or so they think).

In actual fact all that the purchasers is doing is increasing the profit for the company. If you get in as the price is rising and then the value drops down to the real market value, after the hype of this email campaign dies down, then you’ve just paid for someone else to get rich!

Here’s the latest such email that I have received -

MARSHALL HOLDINGS INTERNATIONAL INC’S(MHII.OB) SHARES WILL LEAD YOU ONLY ON HIGH POSITIONS IN BUSINESS.

Have a look at the mailing client -

X-Mailer: The Bat! (v2.12.00) Educational Message-ID:

Whilst The Bat! is a perfectly legitimate mass mailing program, it does, unfairly perhaps, have a poor reputation. For whatever reason (one I will be looking into) it is the scammers’ and spammers’ mailing client of choice. Either that, or they spoof theirs to look like The Bat!

Oh.. and what a strange email address the sender had -

9289885228.20070114113534@carlogo.com

I’m sure a genuine firm would send email under a name rather than a string of numbers but hey, what do I know!?!
