Have you seen all the adverts on the internet, including ebay auctions, for free iPods and other high value, desirable electronics?

I bet you have been wary of taking advantage as it has seemed like a scam. After all, if something is too good to be true then it normally is isn’t it?

Well, for the most part these offers actually are genuine. However, that doesn’t mean for a moment that they are a good idea.

Think for a moment, an iPod costs anywhere from $40 - $200+. Why would anyone want to give one away.. unless there was something in it for them? The answer, of course, is that there most definitely IS something in it for them -

Your sign-up : Just giving them your name, address, date of birth and email address has tremendous value to them. Imagine the junk mail, email spam, or, worse still, the possibility of identity theft.

Your credit card : You are often required to sign up to their partners for video services, or to pay a nominal entry fee. What else can they do with your credit card details when they have them?!?

Referrals : Of course, to actually get your free iPod you need to refer more people to the scheme, generally no less than ten, and often more. And so the company gathers all their information too.

With major companies paying for your details and affiliated signups the original supplier of this deal may be raking in as much as $70 per person x 10 referrals = $700 per ipod that they actually send out… not bad for a free gift eh?

So what’s my advice?

Buy your own iPod!!
