Glade Plug-Ins - Hot Or Not?
Thu, Oct 4, 2007
I said to Aruna yesterday that I have hundreds of email hoaxes saved in my email program. As they seem to be proving popular, I thought I would continue posting them, even though some of them are quite old now.
This one, however, is quite fresh in the UK - I guess it may be related to the sales increases that air fresheners receive in the run up to Christmas.
Subject: Safety warning
Friends, My brother and his wife learned a hard lesson this last week. Their house burned down…nothing left but ashes. They have good insurance, so the home will be replaced and most of the contents. That is the good news. However, they were sick when they found out the cause of the fire.
The insurance investigator sifted through the ashes for several hours. He had the cause of the fire traced to the master bathroom. He asked my sister-in-law what
she had plugged in in the bathroom. She listed the normal things. …curling iron, blow dryer. He kept saying to her, “No, this would be something that would disintegrate at high temperatures.” Then, my sister-in-law remembered she had a Glade Plug-in in the bathroom. The investigator had one of those “Aha” moments. He said that was the cause of the fire. He said he has seen more home fires started with the plug in type room fresheners than anything else. He said the plastic they are made from is a THIN plastic. He said in every case there was nothing left to prove that it even existed. When the investigator looked in the wall plug, the two prongs left from the plug-in were still in there.
My sister-in-law had one of the plug-ins that had a small night light built in it. She said she had noticed that the light would dim….and then finally go out. She would walk in a few hours later, and the light would be back on again. The Investigator said that the unit was getting too hot, and would dim and go out rather than just blow the light bulb. Once it cooled down, it would come back on. That is a warning sign.
The investigator said he personally wouldn’t have any type of plug in fragrance device anywhere in his house. He has seen too many burned down homes.
Thought I would warn you all. I had several of them plugged in my house. I immediately took them all out.
The above email is completely untrue - plug-in air fresheners are quite safe. Some research would seem to indicate that there are no known cases of such an item ever causing a house fire.

Scammer probably works for some home insurance
I liked ancient Egypt site.I thought I would find something about the titanic mummy!
Titanic mummy? hmmm.. sounds interesting.
You know you are always one step ahead of me Aruna.. thanks for the ideas you keep giving me
aw you are welcome scam…that means a lot coming from you
You’ve been a great help Aruna - ganoderma, for instance, certainly proved to be a popular post and I had never heard of it before you brought it to my attention.
i have used these for years with no issues do far, knock on wood.
Scam,
You are right that there are way too many of these ridiculous hoax emails going around… they are even fairly entertaining (once you realize they are a hoax). But my big question is WHY?????
Most scams are designed to rip people off… separate fools from their money, etc…
Most of these hoaxes don’t have ANY “profit” for the originator - or the ones that pass them along.
Do these folks just “get off” on having their lies spread around the world?
Are they sitting around laughing at how “stupid” people are too believe them? Has it occured to them that they accomplished NOTHING with these emails?
What gives?
jb
I would imagine a lot of these are based around people looking for their ‘5 minutes of fame’ on the internet Jon.
I suppose.
Do you think (thought of this after posting first comment) that it may be a way for scammers to get a list of real email addresses?
I.E. “Pass this on to everyone you know” with the hopes of it eventually coming back to them saturated with the email addresses of friends and family, and more importantly, the kind of people that open and pass on any email they find interesting.
Just a thought
ps, what is this egypt site y’all keep talkin’ ’bout?
jb
It’s possible that some hoaxes are designed for the purpose of harvesting email addresses but I don’t think that’s the primary purpose.
Aruna is talking about one of my many other sites - ancient Egypt
Jon, not sure if you want me to drop the url here but I want to thank you for the link you gave me from your new site
Much appreciated.
Actually, perhaps that one could go on the Mary Kay Post.
I want to develop it a little bit more before I make a public “debut” of it. It kind of needs some more content. However, if there are people that want to contribute, I guess no time like the beginning, eh?
Thanks for noticing!
More about that later!

If you write good content you will do well with that subject matter Jon - that single post got me a lot of traffic and several incoming links
Maybe you should find a way of offering great tips and advice whilst guiding interested parties towards your wife?
Personally, you know I am not a great fan of mlm but if you can prsoper from it yourself then go for it!
I agree. Good content is everything. And it is a very hot topic. I like the idea of offering tips from my wife’s experience (I hope to get tips from other happy consultants as well). It will make a good section for folks that may be struggling.
I also am not a great fan of MLM and in fact have been burned by several of them myself. Just not my thing I guess. In fact, when my wife started, I made sure that she knew what she was getting into and that she understood the pros and cons.
We have been married 4 1/2 years, and I have never seen her enjoy any of her jobs as much as she has enjoyed this. So, I figure some of us are gonna dislike it, some of us are going to love it. I am still very cautious when it comes to promoting ANY mlm, including this one. What I can’t stand though is the EXTREME resentment that goes on at other (previously mentioned) site. It unfairly drives people that may truly enjoy Mary Kay away without getting both sides of the story.
So I figured, why not tell the other side. I am not a corporate “soldier” or lawyer, and I am not a bitter ex-mkc, I am just a (almost) nuetral observer!
xD
