Police have been called in to investigate internet postings on a blogspot blog, by someone posing as Lori Drew, the woman many blame for Megan Meier’s suicide.
Lori Drew is believed to have played an integral part in an online hoax played on the 13 year old girl who hanged herself in October of last year.
The Drew family believes the website has been created in an effort to damage their reputation, following the death of Megan Meier.
The blog- ‘MeganHadItComing.com – appeared on the internet around 2 months ago. During the last month both the author, and other blog commentators around the internet, claimed that it was written by Lori Drew.
However, Lori’s attorney said on Friday that she is not in fact the writer.
Police are now investigating whether the blog postings constitute a crime.
Lori Drew’s motives
Posts on the blog claim to explain Lori Drew’s motives for getting involved in the MySpace based hoax against Megan.
According to Lori Drew’s lawyer, Jim Briscoe, Google, owners of the blogging company that the site is hosted on, have been contacted about the issue. A spokesman for Google said that the company is reviewing allegations of impersonation.
The story of Megan Meier, which only gained media coverage in the last month, began when she thought she was corresponding with ‘Josh Evans’ on the social site MySpace. In reality, he never existed.
Myspace hoax
In fact it was Lori Drew, in association with an employee and her own 13 year old daughter who had once been friends with Megan, who created the hoax.
When messages between ‘Josh’ and Megan turned nasty, including one that stated that the world would be better off without her, Megan hanged herself.
Lori Drew, a mother of two in her 40s, denies any wrong-doing and prosecutors have said that there ate no grounds for charges against her.
Since the story became known, especially via internet news postings, the Drews have been barraged with a huge amount of negative publicity, which may have led to Megan’s hometown of Dardenne Prairie adopting a new law which makes internet harassment a misdemeanor.
Irony
In a twist of irony, officials say that the new law’s first use may be to prevent possible harassment against the Drews.
‘I would say that would be a possibility, that they could be the first,’ Mayor Pam Fogarty said Friday. ‘A law is a law is a law. You can’t discriminate.’
