Authorities in Detroit arrested 10 people on Wednesday.

The suspects are believed to have been involved in a pop can smuggling ring.

The 10 people arrested have been charged with crimes ranging from false pretense to running a criminal enterprise.

If convicted, they could face sentences ranging between 5 and 20 years in prison.

With differing rules on pop cans in different areas of America, it is believed that the group collected cans in areas where there are no rebates on offer and then crushed and bagged them before transporting them to Michigan to make their profit.

The original article, found at ClickOnDetroit.com, quotes Col. Peter Munoz, director of the Michigan State Police as saying, “Each year, this type of activity defrauds the state approximately $13 million”.
