The Computer Tan Hoax

in Hoaxes

Would you like to get an all-year tan simply by sitting in front of your computer?

computer-tan-hoaxWell, now you can, apparently…

As the video at ComputerTan.com says -

This technological breakthrough is enabled by converting the electrical impulse delivered to your pc into radiated factor-free UV rays.

Yeah, right!!

I’m sure most people could see straight through that and would realise that it is a hoax.

However, some 30,000 visitors to the website signed up to receive a free computer tan in just 24 hours before The Times Online revealed that it was a marketing effort from Skcin, a British skin cancer charity, designed to raise awareness of skin cancer in the UK.

How many of those signed up though? It may just be people who were curious after this hit the news.

Interesting way to get your message across. More clicks, but less reliability and trust.

I don’t know that I’d categorize everyone who clicked on that link as a victim to a hoax. I, for one, would be willing to follow the link to see what the joke was.
