Hoaxes

Don’t worry, this article is not about Simba getting it on with Pumba!

Then again, the following story may still be cause for concern -

Apparently, a 4-year-old boy from New York was watching Disney’s ‘The Lion King’, with his head leaning to the left.

During the scene with Simba, Pumba and Timon, when they are gazing at the stars and the cloud of dust appears on screen he noticed that the stars and dust spelled the word ’sex’.

The boy told his mother what he had seen and she then reported it to a local religious group, hoping to rally support against The Walt Disney Company.

The American Life League then got behind the story, claiming it to be another example of Disney hiding secret images within its films.

Ultimately, it led to a huge campaign against Disney back in September of 1995.

SPECIAL EFFECTS

One possible explanation given is that the special effects team working on the movie used the stars to spell ‘S-F-X’ in homage to themselves.

Other viewers believe that the ‘F’ looks far to much like an ‘E’, and so do not believe that comeback has any validity.

Others are curious as to why a 4 year old boy would understand the word ‘sex‘ and how he would know that it was misplaced in a dust cloud, even if it was actually there.

SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES?

Disney critics were quick to seize on the story and cite it as proof that Disney is inserting subliminal messages into their films for some nefarious reason.

Personally, I only have The Lion King on an old VHS video cassette that has been watched far too many times by my kids.

The quality of the picture is so grainy that I cannot make out whether the scene show ‘SEX’ or ‘SFX’.

I leave it to someone with a dvd copy to view and come back with their thoughts on what may or may not be written in the skies.

In the meantime, this pdf file has a large amount of disturbing information about secret messages that the authors believe are embedded in Disney movies.

I’m in the camp that asks, “why does a 4 yr old know how to spot the word ’sex’ at all?”

Yeah, it does beggar belief doesn’t it?

I think I would have to question the parenting skills behind a home environment where such talk must be commonplace.

Yes, most of those Disney subliminal image stories I’ve seen make me think, why would a kid even notice it? I mean, the ones I’ve read about, you would have to really squint and use your imagination to see it. Kind of like an optical illusion. And children generally wouldn’t get it because it’s not where their brains are at that point.

Well I would like to think that their brains arn’t there at that sort of age but you just never know - in this day and age they seem to be much more aware of things than I was at that age.

I actually feel sorry for kids in some ways as their opportunities to have a normal childhood seem to be diminishing on a daily basis - they are expected to grow up way too quickly nowadays.
