The South Beach DietThe South Beach Diet

The hugely popular South Beach diet originated in Florida some years ago.

The book of the same name has sold several millions of copies and has been a best seller in the New York list for a considerable amount of time.

Perhaps the reason for it’s popularity is that it promises that those who follow it can lose more than 13lb in just 2 weeks and, not only that, but the weight loss would be from the most difficult place for people to lose weight too - the stomach.

Does It Work?

That, of course, is the million dollar question.

With so many other dieting pills, potions and fads around it can be hard to know which ones really are effective.

In order to ascertain whether the South Beach Diet works, it may be useful to examine it’s origins.

Arthur Agatson

The South Beach Diet was conceived by a cardiologist, Arthur Agatson, who originally intended for his diet to be used for his patients that had heart conditions.

However, he soon realised that they all lost a lot of weight in addition to the other health benefits.

This was to do with the fact that the South Beach diet showed them how to eat the right types of carbohydrates and fats, rather than limiting them in their diets.

It is based upon low GI foods (types of food that keep you full for longer) which yields other health benefits too, for instance for diabetics, because high GI foods such as white bread and cornflakes will cause blood sugar levels to rise too quickly.

This in turn then leads to the body producing too much insulin to break down the carbs, leaving the diabetic feeling tired and hungry again.

Conclusion

Unlike some diet regimes and schemes, the South Beach Diet appears to be based on sound medical principles.

So, does the South Beach diet work?

Almost certainly.
