It sounds like Microsoft is getting close to releasing their first public beta version of Morro, their new free anti-virus software program which should step into the gap left by the demise of Microsoft One Care.
From what I have read so far it seems that Morro will be a fairly slimline product, offering anti-virus protection but without the typical extras such as a firewall.
If you are a Windows 7 user then that will not matter as those features are already available through the new operating system, meaning that Morro would appear to be the ideal solution to take care of the one missing piece of the internet security jigsaw, namely the current lack of anti-virus protection.
It is believed that the final version of Morro will offer protection against the usual suspects, such as viruses, rootkits, trojans and spyware.
Whilst no date has been given yet, Morro is expected to enter the public beta phase in the next few months and will undoubtedly raise an interesting question -
If it works effectively, then why would anyone choose to pay for anti-virus protection when Microsoft are providing everything required either within Windows 7 or via free extras?
I also imagine that Morro would offer an interesting challenge to existing free solutions such as AVG Free.

I’ll wait to see how well rated the finished article is but it could well give avg a run for their money as you say. Interesting times ahead.
I too am interested to see how this stacks up against the competition. If it can give paid anti-virus programs a run for their money then interesting is what it’ll be alright.
