Who’s Been Phishing In MySpace Then?

Scams

Personally, I’m not a big fan of MySpace and it’s various clones - I guess that’s because I’m getting old now! My kids are though and so it was them that brought this one to my attention -

Whilst viewing a MySpace bulletin about some pictures they decided to click on one of them. A window popped up and said they had been logged out. It then asked for their username and password to log back in again.

Luckily, they are just as cynical as me these days and so decided to ask me what I thought. Having heard of this before I did a quick check and quickly realised that the pop up window was nothing to do with MySpace. It was using a redirect to look like MySpace but was almost certainly designed to catch people out in order to acquire access to their accounts.

Best advice for dealing with this type of phishing scam is vigilence. Make sure whenever you use MySpace that you are visiting www.myspace.com and not something like www.myspace.rvx.hu.net or whatever.

Change your password regularly and please try and be inventive with it! (It is estimated that over 40% of the people who play mmorgs, for example, use the password “god” - doesn’t exactly make it hard for the scammers does it!)
