Hoaxes

Following the post I made about Ewan Trembley, I was forwarded this email which is very similar.

It would seem that kids pretending either they, or their friends, are missing seems to be one of the latest crazes.

Please take a few minutes to look at this photo and forward this to as many people as you know. This person has been missing for two days now and her family is Yona Ravelodesperately looking for her.

Please pass this to everyone in your address book.

17 year-old Yohana Ravelo was abducted from Coral Gables, Florida on Friday. If you have ANY information regarding her whereabouts, contact Sergeant Martinez above.

Yohana Ravelo has been missing for two days now. She was last seen on Friday near Coral Gables, Florida. She never reported home and the police are searching for her.

The family is asking for your favor to keep this message going. She could be anywhere and only the power of the internet can help find her.

It is still not too late. Please help us. If anyone any where knows anything, please contact FindYohana@yahoo.com

I am including a picture of her. All help is appreciated!!

It only takes 2 seconds to forward this.

If it was your child, you would want all the help you could get.

With these email hoaxes flying round inboxes in no time, and being posted on popular social networking sites these false rumours of missing children spread like wildfire.

In this case, Yohana Ravelo is meant to have gone missing from Coral Gables and local police are looking for her. In truth, she is not missing at all and the police are not aware of any such reports.

Again, considering the number of children who are genuinely missing, I think such stunts are immature at best and, at worst, could divert attention away from another child who might otherwise be found or saved.

Both that and the Evan Trembley variant are just revised versions of an older “alert” about the equally fictitious Penny Brown…all 3 end w/that “it only takes 2 secs to fwd this” and “if this was your child…” bit.

You are quite right Chuck.

I think these emails are all about attention seeking and are probably thought of as harmless fun by the writers.

However,it is a shame that it detracts from the issue of those children who really are missing.
