Yuliyana Kalinina And The Green Card Marriage Scam

Yuliya Kalinina, 24, is unique – she is a woman who knows what she wants.

So sure, in fact, that she placed an avert on Craigslist, detailing her requirements -

‘Green Card Marriage - Will pay $300/month. Total $15,000?

‘This is strictly platonic business offer, sex not involved.’

(Personally I think it just as well that the Russian national doesn’t want sex.. she’s a bit rough looking).

Her advertisement had the desired effect – it caught the attention of two men.

Twice the attention, twice the trouble.

The first, Benjamin C. Adams, eventually married her on February 17th 2006.

The second, unfortunately for Yuliyana, was an agent working for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Kalinina and her 30 year-old husband were arrested last week for engaging in what federal prosecutors claim was a sham marriage.

An internet first?

Yuliyana may not be the first person in history to engage in a sham marriage. However, this may well be the first case on the internet in which someone has been so explicit about what they wanted and why.

Kalinina’s attorney, Dale Rubin, said she didn’t know it was illegal to marry for a green card. He said that much is obvious from the language she used in her original advert.

Her husband’s attorney, John Littrell, declined to comment.
